False Creek Flats
This short inlet in the heart of Vancouver, separating downtown from the rest of the city is the industrial core of Vancouver. Attracting a number of artists, ecologists, scientists, entrepreneurs and students coming together to work on common goals for new businesses.
False Creek Flats is 300+ acres in the heart of Vancouver bordering downtown. It has been the industrial core of the city, hosting 15% of Vancouver’s industrial land, but recent strategic planning changes have attracted artists, ecologists, scientists, entrepreneurs and students to the area. There are around 325 buildings and over 600 diverse businesses located here. False Creek Flats is the future home of Emily Carr University of Art and Design campus, and the area is increasingly attracting innovative technology companies. With an emphasis on sustainability and clean technologies, The Flats aim to be the greenest place to work in the world.
Originally a tidal flat and fishing ground for Coast Salish communities, False Creek Flats was a major site of early industrial development in Vancouver. By 1915, the area was filled in by two railway companies in order to develop new terminals. Infrastructure was quickly built up on the newly created land, further stimulating industrial development in the area.
Today, False Creek Flats remains an industrial area, but new strategic development is creating an exciting demographic shift. With over 8,000 jobs and a renewed commitment to environmental sustainability, the area is quickly becoming key to Vancouver’s vision for a high-performing economy.
