Overview
Known by many as the heart of Vancouver – Kitsilano (referred to by locals as ‘Kits’) is a seaside community. It is marked by its flourishing wellness scene, readily available organic and local food options and the retail and restaurant hubs of West 4th Avenue and West Broadway. Voted “Vancouver’s Best Neighbourhood” by the Georgia Straight 5 years in a row, it is located in the west side along the south shore of English Bay. Just a short ride over the Burrard Street Bridge from Downtown, there are also a number of express bus lines that make the area easily accessible from any part of the city.
Time in Kits is best spent outside with public parks every few blocks, beaches lining the waterfront and the Kitsilano pool offering both swimming and unparalleled views of the city and North Shore Mountains.
History
Named after the Squamish Chief August Jack Khatsalano, this area boasts a rich past recognized for its commitment to creating a culture distinctly its own. In the 1960s the area was inexpensive, which attracted the hippie counterculture taking over the country. This shift in the population led to the founding of Greenpeace, with the first office located in the neighbourhood.
Today, the population is over 40,000, with close to half falling between the ages of 20 and 39 – a truly desirable location for young professionals and families.
