Overview

Vancouver’s oldest residential neighbourhood and one of the most culturally diverse communities in the city, Strathcona is bordered by Chinatown, Clark Drive, the CN Railway and Burrard Inlet. Its unique location makes it a close drive to most of the city’s hubs, and is only minutes east of the Downtown core.

Known as one of the most exciting areas for development, it holds businesses from all sectors including manufacturing, retail, dining, creative industries and more. The accessibility and variety of this area make it an attractive destination for the entrepreneur looking to start their first business.

History

Strathcona was first settled in mid-1800 and began as a camp of cabins built around Stamps Mill, later renamed Hastings Sawmill. The area became a commercial zone thanks to this industry, which brought the development of banks, theatres, head offices and department stores to Hastings Street. By the 1950s the area was going through an urban renewal and the city sought to transform a large part of the neighbourhood into identical apartments for social housing. The residents, who have a long history of activism and pride for the eclecticism of their community, quickly rejected this idea along with another proposal in the 1960s to build a freeway.

Today, Strathcona retains that same unique sense of community with a population of over 12,000 and around 10,000 households.
